After being in an abusive relationship for a year, I struggled with the baggage that came with it. Now, almost a year later, I have been able to turn my life around for the better. I am finally free.

I came up with the idea over the summer. It wasn't until I left for school that I finally got the chance to get them. I haven't seen anyone in person that has these piercings, but I searched around online and found a video of someone getting it done. I still have yet to fine any pictures on the internet... The piercings themselves weren't bad. What hurt more was the clamp. Layers of my skin got taken off because the piercer had to dig at my hip for about 10 minutes to get the clamp in the right spot. But I'd do it again in a heartbeat. It was worth it.

My older brother, Brendan, died in infancy of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. I've lived my entire life with the knowledge that I have an older brother, but I never got the chance to actually know him. When I got confirmed, I took St. Brendan as my patron saint, and so did my sister. I decided that I wanted to get a tattoo in memory of my brother so I could always carry him with me. I got the idea from a painting. The two hands represent God's hand and my brother's baby hand. The ocean and boat symbolize St. Brendan, the patron saint of saliors and navigators, whom I took on in honor of my brother. The sunrise in the background is there to remind me that there is always a tomorrow and that he is always with me. I got it on my lower back, not down by my tailbone, but more like the middle of my lower back. I have unhealing stress fractures near my tailbone, so everytime the artist put the needle in, my muscles tensed up and my fractures tweaked, but it was more than worth it and I'm so glad I did it.
