My older brother, Brendan, died in infancy of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. I've lived my entire life with the knowledge that I have an older brother, but I never got the chance to actually know him. When I got confirmed, I took St. Brendan as my patron saint, and so did my sister. I decided that I wanted to get a
tattoo in memory of my brother so I could always carry him with me. I got the idea from a painting. The two hands represent God's hand and my brother's baby hand. The ocean and boat symbolize St. Brendan, the patron saint of saliors and navigators, whom I took on in honor of my brother. The sunrise in the background is there to remind me that there is always a tomorrow and that he is always with me. I got it on my lower back, not down by my tailbone, but more like the middle of my lower back. I have unhealing stress fractures near my tailbone, so everytime the artist put the needle in, my muscles tensed up and my fractures tweaked, but it was more than worth it and I'm so glad I did it.
